Sir Robert McAlpine has officially been awarded a £30 million contract to deliver the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST) at Northumbria University’s city campus in Newcastle. This landmark project, backed by the UK Space Agency and Lockheed Martin UK Space, is set to transform the region’s role in the global space industry.

A New Era for Newcastle’s Space Sector

The NESST facility will feature satellite manufacturing clean rooms, advanced prototyping laboratories, a Mission Operations Centre, teaching labs, and collaborative spaces designed to foster partnerships with companies in the space manufacturing supply chain. The project involves the demolition, new build, and extension of the existing Wynne Jones building, resulting in a state-of-the-art, seven-storey hub at the heart of the university campus.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

NESST is projected to directly support the creation of over 350 jobs and inject more than £260 million into the North East economy over the next 30 years. This investment is a significant boost for the region, aligning with the government’s levelling-up agenda and positioning Newcastle as a key player in the UK’s rapidly expanding space sector.

Professor John Woodward, Pro Vice Chancellor (International) at Northumbria University, emphasized the transformative potential of the project:

“The appointment of Sir Robert McAlpine marks an exciting milestone in the development of NESST. The centre will be a game-changer — not only for our students and researchers, but for the region’s ambitions in the space and advanced manufacturing sectors. By combining cutting-edge facilities with strong industry partnerships, we’re creating a centre that will drive innovation, boost economic growth, and put the North East firmly on the map as a leader in space technology.”

Industry Collaboration and Innovation

The NESST project is designed to unite academia and industry, enabling internationally significant research and technological development. Mark Gardham, Sector Director at Sir Robert McAlpine, highlighted the company’s commitment:

“Sir Robert McAlpine’s appointment to lead the delivery of the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre signifies not only our commitment to engineering excellence but also a dedication to pioneering advancements in the UK’s space industry. We look forward to commencing onsite over the coming months.”

The centre’s collaborative approach is expected to attract further investment and create unprecedented links for regional companies to access the global space market. Professor Woodward added:

“NESST is a truly transformative project for the North East region and has allowed us to bring one of the largest satellite and technology companies in the world, Lockheed Martin UK Space, into the UK for the first time. The fact that they are coming here, to the North East, will bring significant inward investment and will create unprecedented links for regional companies to access the global space market.”

Sustainability and Design Excellence

Designed by Ryder Architecture, NESST will retain much of the existing structure, preserving thousands of tonnes of embedded carbon while delivering a new, energy-efficient building. The project’s sustainable approach aligns with broader industry trends toward reducing environmental impact in construction.

Timeline and Future Prospects

Construction is already underway, with steelwork rising on site. The NESST centre is expected to be completed by autumn 2026. Once operational, it will serve as a national asset, supporting the UK’s ambitions in optical satellite communications, space weather, and space-based energy, while providing specialist education and training for the next generation of space sector professionals.
