The company’s announcement explicitly stated that it “was not taken lightly” and expressed gratitude to the Sutherland community for its support – suggesting Orbex wants to keep the door open. In the interim, regional authorities may explore attracting other launch providers to Sutherland. The site still holds an active spaceport license and much of the preliminary infrastructure is in place or planned. If another rocket company were willing to step in, construction could regain momentum. However, most industry watchers agree that Orbex’s involvement remains key, especially since the facility was custom-designed for the Prime rocket and similar small launch vehicles.

Meanwhile, the broader space infrastructure boom continues worldwide. Multiple countries and private firms are racing to build launch capacity as the demand for satellite launches grows. “Given the current shortage of launch infrastructure, we are excited to announce this strategic collaboration with [Oman’s Etlaq Spaceport],” said Raúl Verdú, co-founder of the Spanish rocket company PLD Space, when unveiling a deal for a new launch site in the Middle East. His sentiment echoes the fact that globally, launch pads are at a premium. The United States, for example, saw a record 93 orbital launches from Florida’s Space Coast last year and could exceed 130 launches this year – straining existing pads and logistics. In that context, new spaceports like Sutherland are not white elephants at all, but potentially valuable real estate for the expanding space economy.

Scotland’s bet on space is far from over. Experts predict that as more rockets become operational, the bottleneck will shift from rocket availability to launch site availability. “Forward-facing experts remain confident that as the space economy grows, the demand bottleneck in launch will shift… to spaceports that can accommodate the fleets of cheap, reusable rockets of the future,” notes one industry report on the UK’s multiple spaceport initiatives. By that point, having gotten an early start on spaceport construction could prove a major advantage for Scotland. In other words, Sutherland’s current dormancy may be temporary – it might simply be waiting for the market to catch up.
