Hitachi Energy has commenced construction on what will become the largest power transformer manufacturing facility in the United States. The $457 million project in South Boston, Virginia, represents a transformative investment in America’s critical electrical grid infrastructure at a time when energy demands are reaching unprecedented levels.
Scale of Investment Creates Manufacturing Hub
The facility expansion will add 825 new jobs to Halifax County, positioning the site as the nation’s primary production center for large power transformers. These massive electrical components support high-voltage transmission lines, power generation facilities, AI data centers, and industrial applications requiring substantial electrical capacity.
Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the investment during a September ceremony, emphasizing Virginia’s role in strengthening domestic energy infrastructure. Construction activities are expected to begin before the end of 2025, with full operations scheduled to commence by 2028.
The project forms part of Hitachi Energy’s broader $1 billion commitment to expanding grid infrastructure manufacturing across the United States. The South Boston facility will operate alongside the company’s existing transformer plant, which has served the region since 1968 with 670 employees.
Industry Leaders Highlight Critical Grid Needs
Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy, described power transformers as essential technology for maintaining electrical grid reliability. “Bringing production of large power transformers to the U.S. is critical to building a strong domestic supply chain for the U.S. economy and reducing production bottlenecks, which is essential as demand for these transformers across the economy is surging,” Schierenbeck stated.
The timing proves crucial as utilities nationwide face transformer lead times extending from weeks to multiple years. Large transformers now require up to three years from order to delivery, creating significant bottlenecks for grid expansion projects.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the strategic importance of domestic transformer production. “If we are going to win the AI race, reindustrialize, and keep the lights on, America is going to need a lot more reliable energy,” Wright said. “Thankfully, Hitachi is delivering.”
Economic Impact Extends Beyond Manufacturing
The project’s economic influence reaches well beyond the factory floor. Halifax County donated 10 acres of land adjacent to the Hitachi facility to support workforce housing development. Virginia’s Workforce Housing Investment Program will fund construction of 96 new homes for employees and their families.
Secretary of Commerce and Trade Juan Pablo Segura highlighted the ripple effects of the investment. “825 new employees in South Boston will soon be constructing the critical electrical equipment needed to power even more economic growth in the Commonwealth,” Segura explained.
The facility qualifies for a $29.4 million Major Employment Investment custom performance grant from Virginia’s General Assembly. Halifax County will waive permit and connection fees to accelerate the housing construction timeline.
Congressman John McGuire praised the project’s contribution to regional development. “This $457 million investment and facility will create more than 800 new high-paying jobs in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District,” McGuire noted.
Construction Timeline Addresses Urgent Infrastructure Needs
Site preparation activities will begin immediately, with major construction phases scheduled throughout 2026 and 2027. The facility’s design incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies to meet growing demand from multiple sectors.
The South Boston location provides strategic advantages for distribution across the eastern United States. The facility will manufacture transformers supporting utility-scale renewable energy projects, data center expansions, and industrial facilities requiring high-capacity electrical systems.
Delegate Danny Marshall emphasized the broader implications of domestic transformer production. “Nationwide there is a shortage of electricity, especially for large-scale industrial applications. The shortage of equipment is part of the problem. Southside Virginia will help resolve some of that problem as Hitachi workers produce these crucial transformers.”
Final Thoughts
The project emerged through collaboration between Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Halifax County, the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance, and state legislative leaders. This coordinated approach enabled rapid project approval and streamlined permitting processes.
Linda Green, Executive Director of the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance, characterized the investment as advancing both local and global objectives. “Hitachi’s leadership in transformer technology is advancing energy reliability worldwide, with South Boston, Virginia, standing as a key hub where investment in people and processes strengthens both community growth and global innovation,” Green stated.
The Virginia Talent Accelerator Program will provide workforce training services at no cost to Hitachi Energy. This program, ranked the top customized workforce training initiative in the United States by Business Facilities, will ensure employees receive specialized training on transformer manufacturing processes.
The South Boston facility expansion demonstrates how strategic infrastructure investments can address critical national needs while generating substantial regional economic benefits. As America’s electrical grid faces unprecedented demands from artificial intelligence, renewable energy integration, and industrial expansion, domestic manufacturing capabilities become increasingly vital for maintaining energy security and economic competitiveness.
