In the rugged terrains of the Indian Himalayas, a monumental infrastructure project is taking shape: the Zojila Tunnel. The 14.2-kilometer Zojila Tunnel will cut travel between Srinagar and Leh from over an hour to just 15 minutes. Positioned beneath the Zoji La pass at nearly 12,000 feet, it will become Asia’s longest bi-directional road tunnel. This project promises not only faster journeys but also enhanced strategic mobility for the Indian Armed Forces. The journey to this milestone has been complex, with extreme weather, high-altitude engineering challenges, and unexpected delays. Yet, progress continues at a strong pace.
Strategic Importance
The Zoji La Tunnel is more than an infrastructure project; it is a strategic asset. The pass it bypasses is prone to snow blockages and landslides. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated, “The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity, enhancing civilian access and strategic military mobility in the region.” By reducing travel time dramatically, the tunnel strengthens logistics, improves trade routes, and ensures rapid military deployment if needed.
Construction and Specifications
Construction began on October 15, 2020, led by Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) under NHIDCL supervision. The tunnel is 9.5 meters wide, 7.57 meters high, and features a single tube with two lanes. Engineers have designed it to withstand extreme high-altitude conditions. Over 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT re-bars and structural components, are being used.
Challenges and Delays
The project has faced multiple obstacles. COVID-19 restrictions, severe weather, and a terrorist attack at a nearby site slowed progress. Originally set to finish by September 2026, completion is now targeted for February 2028. Despite these hurdles, as of August 2025, 64% of construction is complete, with over INR 3,900 crore spent.
Economic and Strategic Implications
The Zoji La Tunnel is part of a broader initiative involving 31 tunnels across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The combined investment totals approximately INR 1,400 billion (US$17.5 billion). Once operational, the tunnel will boost tourism, facilitate regional trade, and provide reliable access for the military. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta described the project as “transformative, bringing strategic, economic, and social benefits to the region.”
Projected Completion
February 2028 marks the current target for completion. As progress continues, the tunnel remains on track to become a symbol of engineering resilience in one of the world’s most challenging terrains. Its completion will transform the local economy and improve connectivity year-round.
